Many reasons like corruption, over-population, and illiteracy are responsible for this. The primary reason was corruption. Corruption started when the British invaded India. They had a policy that the officials that were posted to India were very well paid and were punished for any dishonesty. India then gained independence in 1947 and the first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru took over, he retained the extensive powers of the British Administration and reduced the salaries. (Pascal 4,5). This reduction in salaries was apparently a bad decision for the future of India. People started feeling the need of more money because their salaries weren’t sufficient to fulfill their needs. So, the government officials like policemen and ministers started accepting bribes from the public to get their job done. This was the rise of corruption in India.
